We are beginning to rely on using the internet for our daily tasks – banking, music, communication etc. So why not finding support for mental health issues? On Wednesday snow arrived in Sheffield. I was ready to take my children to school and carry onto my counselling practice, when I heard that my children’s school was closed. Obviously my children were delighted. I was not. I knew I had clients. I do not like cancelling clients. However, in this instance I had no choice.
I picked up the telephone and called my first client. It turned out they could have not made the session either but they asked me if we could have our session on Skype. I already have clients on Skype so I thought that it could be a possibility and agreed. My children were bundled over the road with some friends and I sent a new contract with my client and we had our session via Skype. Continue reading

Over the last few years I had noticed that counselling was changing and online counselling (e-therapy, e-counselling) was becoming more popular. I was curious of online counselling and as a private practitioner I thought it would be good to offer this service in addition to my face to face work. I carried out research and saw transferring the use of counselling skills into an online media required additional skills and competencies to those utilised within face to face contact. Royal baby news
Baby talk is the forefront of most people’s mind this week as we welcome the arrival of our new baby prince to his proud parents, William and Kate. Woman’s Hour mentioned that 80% of the population would be feeling happy on Monday. A close friend of mine heard this and said “Maybe some of us aren’t joyous, as the pain of seeing a healthy baby. It saddens us when it reminds us of our own losses and failures”. She had suffered Post Natal Depression (PND) with her first child and only remembers tears and sadness in the first year of her baby’s life. We are slowly hearing of more and more women who suffer from PND and there are a lot more who continue to suffer in silence. Postnatal depression affects 15% of expectant mothers. Continue reading
