What to expect from your first counselling session – Sheffield

What happens in your first counselling session?

Many people in Sheffield ask me what a first counselling session is like.

It is completely normal to feel unsure or nervous before coming. You might be wondering what you will be asked, what you should say, or even if you are doing the right thing.

If you are wondering if you need counselling, you are not alone. Most people start there.

What happens in a first counselling session?

Calm counselling room with soft lighting, two chairs facing each other and a small table creating a welcoming therapy spaceThe first session is a chance for us to meet and begin to get a sense of whether working together feels right.

There is no pressure to get everything out. You do not need to have your story organised.

We will usually talk about:

  • what has brought you to counselling
  • what is going on for you at the moment
  • what you might want from therapy

You can share as much or as little as feels comfortable.

What will I be asked?

I may ask some gentle questions to help understand you and your situation better.

For example:

  • what has been difficult recently
  • how things are affecting you day to day
  • what you would like to be different

This is not an interview or a test. It is simply a conversation.

Do I have to talk about everything?

No.

You are in control of what you share. Some people come with something very specific. Others are not quite sure where to begin.

Both are completely fine.

You do not have to go into anything you are not ready for.

How might I feel afterwards?

People often feel a sense of relief after the first session.

However, you might also feel a bit tired or thoughtful. This is normal. Talking about things can take energy.

There is no right or wrong way to feel.

What happens next?

At the end of the session, we can think together about next steps.

You might decide to continue, or you may want time to reflect. There is no pressure either way.

If you are experiencing anxiety or difficulties in relationships, we can also begin to explore what support might look like for you.

You do not have to get it right

You do not have to say the right thing or explain everything perfectly.

There is no test. No judgement.

We simply start where you are.
